What Facilitators Do Plus Tips
Original content developed by Kalamity Hildebrandt, SFPIRG Workshop Design and Facilitation Course for Social Change Makers. Adapted and facilitated as part of an ‘Include Everyone’ workshop series by Andrea Robin on February 4, 2019.
Facilitators do:
Set the tone, create the container, hold space
Taking on the role of facilitator means taking on certain ethical responsibilities.
Proceed through the agenda
Be cautious about being rigid in the face of mass resistance to the agenda itself; be open to reconsidering / renegotiating the agenda.
Keep the group ‘on time’ and ‘on topic’ and ‘on task’
...while respecting that sometimes making a point involves people being able to tell stories, draw metaphors, etc. Respecting different approaches to communication requires flexibility, but not so much that derailing happens.
Ensure participation
...while respecting people’s right to participate as it feels right to them.
Watch vibes
Monitoring the energy / emotions in the room and responding appropriately - create space for feelings if needed without violating people’s boundaries.
Help the group to build consensus when there are decisions to be made
Be conscious about not trying to sway the decision unless it is clear that you are a member of the group with an interest in the outcome and it is understood that you will not be neutral on issues. Even then, you should be conscious and clear about when you are wearing the ‘facilitator hat’ and when you are weighing in as a member. Keep the process fair.
Manage conflict and disruptive behaviours
An important goal here is to address what comes up without shaming or alienating participants. We owe a duty to ALL participants, not just the ones we like. Ideally, we will avoid ‘throwing away’ a troublesome participant and keep everyone in the process even if they are in vastly different places in that process.

Check your facts. Stay on top of your field. Be as honest and accurate as you can be.
